Children and Teenagers  dealing with obesity may be tired, moody or struggling at school? Can you spot these issues?  It could be to do with what they are eating or not eating.  Do you need our help?

Children need an adequate diet in order for them to grow and develop healthily.  However, if they eat too many of the wrong types of food and do not participate in physical activity, they can develop habits that will affect future health and well being.  Parents should understand the concept of nutrition.  Nutrition is not just a means to eliminate cravings, nor an activity to avoid hunger.  Nutrition is a very important day to day activity and its only vital purpose is to provide nutrients for each one of the cells in the body.  Deficiencies, excesses and imbalances in diet can produce negative impacts on health, which may lead to acne, arthritis, obesity, oesteoporosis, as well as psychological and behavioural problems.

There is so much temptation for children and their families to follow a lifestyle which can contribute to them being overweight or obese.  Food high in calories and fat is cheap, easily available and particularly attractive to children.  Play and leisure opportunities are often inactive and centered around technology, such as computers and games consoles.

It is difficult to go against this trend, but we can support children and families by ensuring that there are healthy options – whether this is through play and leisure activities or learning opportunities or by planning a menu carefully.  We can also raise awareness and provide support of the issues through covering topics, themes and activities of interest to particular age groups including teenagers.

Children and young people who are overweight or obese risk being bullied, socially isolated and unable to develop to their full potential.  During adolescence, when self image is so important, it can lower their self esteem and feelings of self worth.  Their weight may also affect their physical ability to the extent that they have difficulty in taking part in physical activity and sport.

There are health risks and these are, diabetes, some types of cancer, joint pain and arthritis.

Not only will we help them lose weight, but with the help of their buddy we will set them on the right track to give them the best chance of good health for the future and improve their self confidence.

We will be able to examine what they are doing wrong and identify problems that are adding to a weight problem.

Childhood obesity

Childhood obesity is already at epidemic levels in some inner city areas in the UK. According to Camden PCT, based on a child population of 14,300, it is estimated that 58% are overweight and obese.
